Kenyan students plant mangroves in Guinness World Record attempt for coastal restoration
timesofindia.indiatimes.comOver 4,000 Kenyan students and scouts gathered at the Jomvu Kuu Mangrove Site in Mombasa County to attempt a Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous mangrove planting. The event, organized by the Kenya Forest Service and Kenya Scouts Association, aimed to restore vital coastal ecosystems while engaging youth in conservation. Mangroves are critical for carbon storage, coastal protection, and biodiversity. While the record attempt draws attention, the real value lies in the restoration work itself. Mangrove forests sequester carbon at rates much higher than terrestrial forests and provide essential habitat. The involvement of thousands of young volunteers signals growing awareness of nature-based climate solutions in Kenya. However, long-term survival rates of the planted mangroves will determine the actual environmental benefit, not just the initial planting numbers.
