Kenya targets March 2027 for national carbon exchange under KES 335 trillion climate finance plan
streamlinefeed.co.keKenya's Capital Markets Authority and the Nairobi Securities Exchange are finalizing plans to launch a national carbon exchange by March 2027. The exchange will create a regulated marketplace for verified carbon credits, replacing fragmented voluntary projects with a sovereign-backed system. The goal is to capture a larger share of global climate finance for local communities and project developers. The exchange is built on the Climate Change Act 2023 and the 2024 Carbon Markets Regulations. A National Carbon Registry launched in February 2026 now tracks all credits. The government estimates Kenya faces a KES 335 trillion climate adaptation financing gap, and the exchange is meant to channel carbon revenue toward closing that gap while meeting the country's 32 percent emissions reduction target by 2030. Key details include mandatory benefit-sharing for rural communities and compliance with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The exchange will replace opaque over-the-counter deals with a transparent, regulated trading floor. If the March 2027 launch holds, Kenya will have one of the most vertically integrated carbon market infrastructures in the developing world.
