Kenya targets $5 billion in carbon exchange investments by 2028
capitalfm.africaKenya plans to attract $5 billion (Sh646 billion) in investments by 2028 through a regulated carbon exchange, according to the Nairobi International Financial Centre (NIFC). The exchange will allow investors to buy and sell carbon credits from projects like tree planting and renewable energy. It builds on the National Carbon Registry launched in February 2026. The NIFC is working with the Capital Markets Authority, Nairobi Securities Exchange, and Central Bank of Kenya to set up the exchange and related rules. Officials say the goal is to improve transparency and investor confidence in Kenya's carbon market while positioning Nairobi as a regional financial hub. The NIFC also aims to have 150 firms operating within the centre by 2028, focusing on sustainable finance and technology.
