Kenya Plans National Carbon Exchange by 2027 to Boost Carbon Trading and Climate Finance
carboncredits.comKenya announced plans to launch a national carbon exchange by 2027, aiming to become a leading carbon trading hub in Africa. The exchange will create a transparent marketplace for verified carbon credits, supporting price discovery and attracting international investment. Kenya already has over 70 million verified carbon credits from more than 100 projects, giving it a strong foundation. The country's electricity grid is already more than 90% renewable, with geothermal power leading the mix. Kenya's 2024 Carbon Markets Regulations set standards for projects and benefit sharing, preparing the country for trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The government estimates it needs about $62 billion by 2030 to meet its climate goals, with carbon markets expected to play a key role in financing forest protection, renewable energy, and ecosystem restoration.
