Kenya green exports untapped: KIPPRA report cites policy, finance, clean tech gaps
eastleighvoice.co.keKenya's green export potential is largely untapped, according to a KIPPRA report. Low-carbon machinery and intermediate goods account for less than 1% of GDP, while horticulture, coffee, tea, textiles and apparel make up about 52.4% of export value. That leaves the country's main exports exposed to stricter climate rules like the EU Deforestation Regulation and CBAM. KIPPRA points to high upfront costs for clean technology, limited green finance, and policy gaps in the East African Community Common External Tariff as key barriers. It recommends removing import duties on green machinery, setting up specialized green export zones in SEZs, and building a national carbon accounting and reporting framework. Implementation will be the hard part. Weak coordination, limited enforcement, and weak links between local suppliers and exporters have already slowed Kenya's climate policies. The report suggests aligning trade agreements with Kenya's climate commitments, but exporters need practical tools and financing sooner rather than later.
