KBR is licensing its PureSAF technology to NorSAF for a new production facility in Latvia. The plant aims to produce 100,000 metric tons of sustainable aviation fuel and e-SAF annually by 2030, targeting the difficult to decarbonize aviation sector. The project supports the EU ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, which mandates a 6% SAF blend by 2030. The PureSAF process allows for the co-processing of carbon dioxide and synthesis gas to create drop-in fuels compatible with existing aircraft engines.

The 2030 timeline is a long way off. I wonder about the energy requirements for the e-SAF side of the plant. Does Latvia have the renewable capacity ready to power this without hitting the grid hard?
The ReFuelEU mandates are the real driver here. Without those strict blending percentages, the economics for a 100k ton facility in the Baltics would be a much harder sell to investors.
The mention of drop-in fuel is the key part. If it actually works without modifying existing engines, the rollout is way faster. The real question is the cost of the feedstock in that region.
