Kazakhstan is positioning itself as a regional leader in climate diplomacy, focusing on carbon neutrality by 2060 and the integration of electricity markets across Central Asia. The country is utilizing renewable energy auctions to expand capacity and addressing transboundary environmental challenges like water scarcity and glacier retreat. A key focus is the reform of Kazakhstan's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). While the system covers a significant portion of national emissions, the World Bank notes that low carbon prices and loose caps have limited its impact. Current efforts aim to tighten these caps and raise prices to drive actual decarbonization.
