The Katingan Mentaya Project, a large peatland conservation initiative in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, has re-entered the international voluntary carbon market. It issued roughly 20 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emission reductions, or 17.3 million Verified Carbon Units after buffer deductions. The credits cover the 2021 to 2023 monitoring period and received AA ratings from both BeZero Carbon and Sylvera. They are certified under Verra's VCS and CCBS standards. The project protects and restores 157,875 hectares of tropical peat swamp forest that was originally slated for industrial acacia plantations. It also supports 41 local villages and protects endangered species like the Bornean orangutan. The return to market follows a mandatory 10 year scientific review of the project's baseline assumptions and the reopening of Indonesia's international carbon market after regulatory reforms and a mutual recognition agreement between Indonesia and Verra signed in October 2025.
