Kashmir Himalayas: Lidder Valley Glaciers Shrink 17% Over 30 Years

A study from the University of Kashmir reveals that glaciers in the Lidder Valley have decreased in area by 17% since 1980. Researchers found that snowlines have risen by nearly 300 meters, driven primarily by rising air temperatures and the impact of black carbon emissions. This ice loss threatens the long term stability of water supplies for agriculture, drinking water, and hydroelectric power in the region. Projections suggest temperatures in the Kashmir Himalayas could rise by more than 6 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.
