Kapuni Green Hydrogen Project: Four Vestas Turbines to Power Fertilizer Plant and Truck Fuel in New Zealand
ecoportal.netNew Zealand's Kapuni wind project will add four Vestas V162-6.4 MW turbines in Taranaki, with commissioning planned for 2027. The 25.6 MW wind farm will supply a 5 MW electrolyser that can produce up to two tonnes of green hydrogen per day, feed the nearby Ballance fertilizer plant, and export surplus power to the national grid. The project pairs wind generation with an existing industrial customer, which gives the hydrogen a clear offtaker. Replacing natural gas feedstock at the fertilizer plant and diesel in regional trucking are the main emission reductions. Storage, backup power, and distribution costs remain open questions for scaling similar projects.
