Kansas students build first hemp-insulated social house with 85% less concrete and solar roof

Students from Kansas State University partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build an 80-square-meter hemp-insulated house in Ogden, Kansas. The house uses a hempcrete floor that cuts concrete use by 85%, and a solar roof that feeds energy back to the grid. The project is expected to become carbon negative in under 20 years. This is the first hemp-insulated house approved for construction in Kansas. It was built for a low-income family and demonstrates how natural materials can reduce embodied carbon in residential buildings. The combination of hemp insulation, reduced concrete, and on-site solar generation offers a replicable model for affordable, low-carbon housing.
