Kahului Airport reaches Level 3 carbon accreditation as Hawaii airports target net zero by 2045

Hawaii's five largest airports, including Kahului Airport (OGG), have reached Level 3 under the Airport Carbon Accreditation program. The Hawaii Department of Transportation says this means they have mapped airport-wide emissions, set a net zero target, and are working with airlines and tenants to cut third-party emissions. The goal is to reduce airport-controlled carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and hit net zero by 2045, backed by vehicle electrification and an energy security plan released in 2025. Achieving net zero by 2045 depends on continued state and federal funding for infrastructure projects. The airports are also expanding their emissions inventory to cover aircraft operations and ground transportation. This is a concrete step for a state heavily dependent on air travel and vulnerable to fuel price swings. The real test will be whether the funding and execution follow the roadmap.
