Japanese shipping firm Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has signed a time charter contract with Northern Lights for a new 12,000 cubic meter liquefied CO2 carrier. The vessel, built by Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore, is the second such ship K Line has committed to the Northern Lights carbon capture and storage project in Europe. K Line already operates three smaller 7,500 cubic meter carriers for the same project. The deal expands K Line's role in the growing business of moving captured carbon dioxide from industrial sources to permanent storage sites. Northern Lights, a joint venture between Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, is building out a cross-border CO2 transport and storage network in Europe. The new ships will help scale that logistics chain as more emitters look to ship CO2 rather than store it locally.

12k cubic meters is still small compared to LNG carriers but it shows the segment is moving. Dalian Shipbuilding building them, so Chinese yards are in the CO2 carrier game now.

Anyone know the timeline for these vessels to enter service? The article says 2026 contract but no delivery date. CCS projects live or die on logistics timing.

Northern Lights Phase 1 is operational with the smaller ships. Phase 2 needs more capacity. If these are for Phase 2, delivery probably 2028-2029. That aligns with EU storage targets.

K Line partnering with MISC on this. Both are LNG shippers diversifying into CO2. The operational experience from LNG transfers directly. Makes sense as a business line extension.
