Northern Lights, the North Sea carbon transport and sequestration joint venture backed by Equinor, TotalEnergies, and Shell, has finalized the last charter agreement for its four new liquefied CO2 carriers. K Line and MISC won the second charter, matching the earlier contracts awarded to MOL. Each vessel will have 12,000 m3 capacity and deliver between late 2028 and early 2029. Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore Co will build the final confirmed vessel, while HD Hyundai Heavy Industries builds two others. This completes the fleet expansion announced in January 2026. The vessels will move captured CO2 from industrial emitters to permanent storage sites under the North Sea. The project shows how dedicated shipping infrastructure is being built to support CCS at scale. It also signals growing commercial confidence in carbon transport as a service model, with multiple shipowners competing for long-term charters.
