JSW Steel starts work on Rs 16,350 crore low-carbon steel plant in Andhra Pradesh

JSW Steel has begun construction on a Rs 16,350 crore integrated steel plant in Andhra Pradesh's Rayalaseema region. The first phase, costing Rs 4,500 crore, will build a 1 million tonne per annum plant using low-carbon electric arc furnace technology. A second phase will double capacity to 2 MTPA with an additional Rs 11,850 crore investment. The project is being developed through subsidiary JSW Rayalaseema Steel Ltd. and was launched with state Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal present. This plant is notable for its focus on low-carbon steel production via EAF technology, which can significantly reduce emissions compared to traditional blast furnaces if paired with clean electricity. The project signals growing industrial investment in Andhra Pradesh's Rayalaseema region and aligns with India's broader push for greener manufacturing. For carbon markets and climate watchers, the key question is whether the plant's electricity supply will come from renewable sources to realize the promised low-carbon output.
