JSW Steel has launched a Rs 16,350 crore low-carbon steel project in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. The project aims to produce steel using methods that reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional blast furnace routes. This is a significant investment in India's industrial decarbonization, as steelmaking is one of the hardest sectors to clean up due to its reliance on coal for heat and chemical reduction. The facility is expected to use direct reduced iron (DRI) with natural gas or green hydrogen, along with electric arc furnaces powered by renewable energy. If executed, this could cut emissions per ton of steel substantially versus conventional plants. The project also signals that large Indian steelmakers are moving beyond pilot phases into commercial scale low-carbon production. The project's success will depend on securing reliable renewable power and cost competitive green hydrogen at scale.
