JSW Steel, Bharatia, and Carbon Iceland International have signed an agreement to develop a 300 KTPA green methanol project in Maharashtra, India. The project will use carbon capture and utilization (CCU) to convert industrial CO2 emissions from steel production into eMethanol using green hydrogen. This collaboration focuses on creating a scalable model for decarbonizing heavy industry and providing low-carbon fuels for shipping and manufacturing. The partners are currently assessing existing high-purity CO2 streams at JSW facilities to determine the project's initial scale and technical feasibility.

300 KTPA is a decent target, but the real question is the green hydrogen source. If they are relying on the local grid, they need massive new renewable capacity to avoid just shifting the emissions. Where is the electrolyzer power coming from?

That is the core issue. Without a clear carbon accounting standard for eMethanol in India, the financial incentive depends entirely on whether they can sell these as certified low-carbon fuels or if they are just chasing a subsidy.

Capturing a high-purity CO2 stream is a smart start. It is much cheaper than scrubbing dilute flue gas. I wonder what the actual cost per tonne of methanol will be compared to fossil versions once the CAPEX for the CCU plant hits the books.
