JSW Group has announced a Rs 50,361 crore investment in Andhra Pradesh, with a strong focus on green energy and low-carbon manufacturing. JSW putting 20k crore into 3.85 GW of solar and wind in Andhra is the part that matters most here. The steel plant gets the headlines but the renewable buildout is what actually cuts emissions. Hope they actually build the transmission for it.

3.85 GW across four districts is a lot of capacity. The article mentions a 400 MW captive solar plant for the steel mill but not how the rest connects to the grid. Kadapa and Anantapur have decent solar resources but the transmission backbone in Rayalaseema is weak. Would like to see the PPA or ISTS plan.

The state fast-tracking a 12 km rail link and road upgrades is a good sign. But the real test is whether the renewable power gets priority dispatch or gets curtailed when the grid is saturated. Also curious if the green steel qualifies for any production linked incentive or carbon credit scheme.

EAF with DRI and scrap is the right move for lower emissions. But the cost of scrap in India and the availability of DRI-grade iron ore will determine if this is actually cheaper than a blast furnace. The 400 MW captive solar helps but only if the plant runs during daylight hours or they add storage.
