The Josef-Schwarz-Schule in Heilbronn, Germany, is a new campus for primary through upper secondary students built with a timber-hybrid structure. Wood is the defining material, chosen for its natural insulation and ability to store carbon. The school uses clay-based radiant ceilings for heating and cooling, relies on natural ventilation instead of mechanical air conditioning, and gets energy from geothermal systems and rooftop photovoltaic panels. The project has received a DGNB Diamond pre-certification aiming for Platinum, the highest rating from the German Sustainable Building Council. The campus covers about 60,000 square meters and includes three buildings on an elevated landscape plateau. Outdoor terraces, green roofs, and open spaces connect the buildings. The design emphasizes a seamless relationship between interior and exterior to support learning and social interaction. Materials like larch wood, clay, ceramics, and rubber come mostly from Central Europe and are largely recyclable. This project shows how a large educational facility can meet high sustainability standards without relying on complex mechanical systems. The combination of timber structure, passive climate strategies, and on-site renewables makes it a benchmark for low-carbon school architecture. It demonstrates that carbon storage in building materials and energy efficiency can go together in a real-world, certified project.
