Jordan has signed a $1 billion investment deal to build its first utility-scale green ammonia facility near Aqaba. The project will use a 550 MW solar array and battery storage to power electrolysis, producing 100,000 tons of green ammonia annually for export to Europe and Asia. The off-grid plant aims to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 200,000 tons per year. Financial close is expected by September 2027, with commercial operations scheduled to begin in November 2030.

Off-grid is the right call here to avoid stressing the national system, but 550 MW of solar for 100k tons of ammonia is a tight ratio. I wonder what the actual capacity factor is and how much battery storage they really need to keep the electrolyzers running.
