JLR Cornerstone Concept Vehicle: 49 Sustainable Auto Parts Cut Carbon by Over a Tonne
manufacturingdigital.comJLR has unveiled the Cornerstone concept vehicle, developed with over 40 supply chain partners, featuring 49 sustainable components. The project aims to cut combined carbon footprint by half compared to existing processes and materials. JLR reports more than a tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent savings, equivalent to a passenger flight from Paris to New York. Key innovations include 100% closed-loop recycled glass with a 36% CO2 reduction, de-bondable electronics for headlamp repair, and 95% recycled magnets in speakers. JLR's Circularity Lab at Gaydon disassembles vehicles to identify circularity challenges, feeding data into vehicle development. Initial tests on front bumpers using less polymers saved 177,500kg of CO2 equivalent and over $700,000 in costs. The article highlights how circularity in manufacturing addresses resource scarcity and supply chain resilience. By keeping materials in closed loops, manufacturers can reduce dependence on raw material extraction, which the World Resources Institute projects will surge 150% by 2060 under business-as-usual. Remanufacturing and circular reverse logistics also shorten supply chains and avoid global logistics shocks.
