JIRCAS and IRRI Renew Low-Carbon Rice Research Partnership, Focus on AWD and Soil Microbes
global-agriculture.comJIRCAS and IRRI signed a renewed research agreement in Tokyo on October 13, 2026 to advance low-carbon rice production in Asia. The first workplan will look at soil, microbiomes, and biological nitrogen fixation to reduce fertilizer-related emissions. The second will test alternate wetting and drying irrigation across Southeast Asia, measuring rice yields, methane emissions, and water use. The collaboration is built around adoption, not just lab results. Researchers are asking who decides when to irrigate under AWD and what makes the practice practical for farmers. That matters because methane reduction only works if farmers can actually run the system under real field conditions. Rice is one of the largest sources of agricultural methane, and AWD is a known mitigation option with strong potential in the region. More field data from this partnership could support national GHG inventories, future carbon projects, and practical guidance for rice-growing communities.
