Jindal Stainless supplies steel for India's first hydrogen train, supporting green rail goals

Jindal Stainless has supplied 40% of the stainless steel for India's first hydrogen-powered train, using grade X5CrNi1810 from its Jajpur and Hisar plants. The company has supplied Indian Railways for over three decades and reported a turnover of INR 42,955 crore in FY26. This project is a step toward decarbonizing India's rail network, which is one of the largest in the world. Hydrogen trains produce only water vapor as exhaust, cutting direct emissions compared to diesel locomotives. The steel supply deal also signals growing demand for specialized materials in green transport infrastructure. For carbon markets and climate watchers, this is a concrete example of industrial supply chains shifting to support hydrogen mobility. The real test will be scaling hydrogen production and refueling infrastructure to make these trains a practical alternative across the network.
