Jharkhand explores REDD+ roadmap to unlock forest-based climate finance
timesofindia.indiatimes.comJharkhand is moving toward a state-specific REDD+ program to access results-based climate finance. The state has 23,765.78 sq km of forest cover, about 29.81% of its area, with forests estimated to store 186.43 million tonnes of carbon. Officials discussed the plan in a high-level meeting chaired by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Sanjiv Kumar, with a focus on protecting sal forests, restoring degraded landscapes, and generating livelihoods through bamboo plantations and natural regeneration. The proposal faces real hurdles. Credible carbon baselines, robust monitoring systems, and transparent benefit-sharing mechanisms have to be built from scratch. Community rights under the Forest Rights Act and PESA must be respected, or the program will lack social legitimacy. Jharkhand's forest officials say they want community participation included from the planning stage, but the gap between that intention and actual implementation is where most REDD+ programs stall.
