Japanese power generation firm Jera has established a new division in Singapore called Jera Global Energy Solutions (GES) to focus on LNG, upstream gas, lower carbon fuels, and shipping. The unit aims to respond quickly to market needs while keeping supply security for Japan as the top priority. Japan imports 95% of its crude oil and 11% of its LNG from the Middle East, making it vulnerable to geopolitical disruptions. The new unit will advance lower carbon fuels like ammonia and hydrogen, with Irtiza H. Sayyed appointed as CEO and Ryosuke Tsugari as Chief Low Carbon Fuel Officer. Jera has also signed an MOU with Thai state utility EGAT to explore gas opportunities in Thailand. Separately, the company is moving forward with the Blue Point Project in Louisiana, a partnership with CF Industries and Mitsui to produce green ammonia for export to Japan by 2029. Jera has already chartered four very large gas carriers for ammonia transport and demonstrated 20% ammonia co-firing at its Hekinan coal plant. These moves show how Japanese utilities are building out lower carbon fuel supply chains, though the timeline to commercial scale remains long.

The Blue Point Project in Louisiana is supposed to start in 2029. That is still years away. And they are chartering ships now for ammonia transport. The logistics are moving faster than the production.

They already demonstrated 20% ammonia co-firing at Hekinan coal plant. That is real. But scaling from demo to full fleet and building the supply chain from Louisiana to Japan by 2029 is a big leap. Interconnection and port infrastructure will be the bottleneck.
