Japanese utility Jera and South Korean conglomerate Samsung C&T are exploring a joint effort to track and attribute carbon intensity for green hydrogen and ammonia imports. The collaboration aims to address the growing challenge of certifying the carbon footprint of ammonia as cross-border trade expands. Current certification frameworks are mostly voluntary and fragmented, making consistent carbon accounting difficult for large-scale shipments. The partnership would focus on value chain security and segregation of carbon intensity attributes. Both companies are also building domestic green hydrogen projects, including Jera's solid oxide electrolyser at a thermal power station and Samsung C&T's off-grid green hydrogen plant in South Korea. The Ammonia Energy Association recently launched a voluntary certification system with MiQ to help standardize tracking. Harmonized standards and robust chain-of-custody systems are seen as essential for enabling credible carbon intensity attribution. Without them, buyers cannot verify the emissions profile of imported ammonia, which is critical for use in fertilizer, clean fuels, and industrial applications. This deal signals that major Asian importers are pushing for better accounting before volumes scale up.
