JCOM, Japan's largest cable TV and broadband operator, has signed a solar virtual PPA with Osaka Gas and its subsidiary Daigas Energy. The deal will supply renewable power and environmental credits to JCOM's western Japan facilities, with delivery starting in October 2028. Capacity and financial terms were not disclosed, but the structure allows JCOM to source green attributes from new-build solar projects without direct grid interconnection. JCOM is targeting carbon neutrality by 2030, and this vPPA is part of that push. The agreement comes as Japan's data center and telecom sector ramps up renewable procurement to meet decarbonization goals. JCOM's parent KDDI recently launched a 48MW AI data center in Osaka, signaling growing compute demand in western Japan. Osaka Gas has been expanding its solar portfolio, including a 30MW/125MWh battery storage project in Kyushu. The October 2028 delivery start gives JCOM roughly 18 months of renewable supply before its 2030 deadline, which may require additional deals or offsets to cover its full footprint.
