Japan Launches Japan GHG Center, a Public Hub for Greenhouse Gas Data and Satellite Observations
mainichi.jpJapan's National Institute for Environmental Studies and JAXA are launching the Japan GHG Center, a public data hub that brings together greenhouse gas observations from satellites, ground measurements, and domestic emissions figures. The center aims to give policymakers, businesses, and researchers one place to find information that is currently scattered across Japanese agencies and institutions. The site will include data from JAXA's Ibuki observation satellite and national emissions trends. Japan, the world's fifth-largest CO2 emitter, has a net-zero target for 2050. Backers say the hub will also support Paris Agreement reporting and work with the UN Environment Programme by improving cross-country comparisons of emissions. The real test will be whether the data stays current, uses consistent methodology, and is accessible beyond Japan. If it delivers on that, it could make Japanese climate progress easier to verify.
