Japan is set to launch the first commercial large gas engine that can generate electricity using a fuel mix with up to 30% hydrogen by volume. Developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, the 8 MW engine is built on the KG series platform and completed an 11-month trial in Kobe. The design allows existing natural gas plants to upgrade to hydrogen co-firing without replacing pipes or storage tanks, reducing direct CO2 emissions per kilowatt hour. The engine is backed by Japan's Green Innovation Fund, which provides public financing for technologies that cut emissions but face high upfront costs. However, the fuel supply chain is still under development. Japan's first commercial liquid hydrogen import terminal is expected around 2030, and a new hydrogen carrier is being built to support international shipping routes. For plant operators, the main benefit is flexibility: they can run on natural gas today and switch to hydrogen blends as supply grows. This avoids stranded assets and gives the grid a practical path to lower emissions without waiting for a complete fleet replacement.
