Janata Jute Mills Launches 17.84 MW Solar Plant in Bangladesh, Claims First Carbon-Neutral Jute Company
thefinancialexpress.com.bdJanata Jute Mills Limited in Boalmari, Bangladesh, has inaugurated a 17.84 MW solar power plant. The project was financed by IDCOL and supported by German development cooperation. It is expected to generate about 18,700 MWh of clean electricity annually and reduce roughly 13,960 tons of CO2 emissions per year. The mill claims to be the first jute company in the world to operate on renewable energy and the first carbon-neutral company in Bangladesh. The Akij Bashir Group, which owns the mill, has pledged to meet 100% of its electricity demand from renewables. IDCOL has financed 370 MWp of solar projects so far and aims to reach 1,000 MWp by 2030. The inauguration highlights the growing role of private industry in Bangladesh's energy transition, backed by international climate finance.
