Dutch company Jalo is raising €20 million in equity to fund a bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) plant in Almelo. The facility aims to produce 125,000 tonnes of sustainable pellets annually while capturing 56,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 for industrial use and permanent storage. The project represents a total investment of €52.5 million, utilizing a mix of equity, senior debt, and public support. Jalo intends for the Almelo site to serve as a replicable model for low-carbon energy and durable carbon removal infrastructure across the Netherlands and Europe.

The capture numbers look okay, but I want to see the actual storage contract. Who is taking the CO2 and where is it going? Permanent storage in the Netherlands usually means North Sea pipelines, which have their own bottlenecks.

52.5 million total cap ex for this capacity seems tight. I wonder what the O&M costs look like for the capture unit once it is actually running. Those things usually eat more energy than people admit in the pitch deck.

Mentioning REDIII compliance is the key part here. If they cannot hit those strict EU sustainability criteria for biomass, the carbon removals won't count toward official targets. The regulatory risk is higher than the technical risk.
