Jain Irrigation to Supply 19,000 Tonnes of Biochar Carbon Credits to Supercritical by 2027
equitypandit.comJain Irrigation has signed an agreement to supply up to 19,000 tonnes of biochar carbon credits to UK-based Supercritical Tech by 2027. The credits will come from the company's biochar plant in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, covering production in 2026 and 2027. The plant converts farm waste and food-processing leftovers into biochar through gasification, with the resulting gas used to replace fossil fuels in Jain Irrigation's factories. Puro.earth is verifying the project and BeZero Carbon is preparing an independent rating. According to Supercritical, 81% of the 2026 biochar quota was already booked by July, three months ahead of last year's pace. Jain Irrigation also commissioned a 20,000 tonne per year biochar facility in June and says the approach avoids the cost of building new projects. Biochar is a charcoal-like material that can hold carbon in soil for centuries when mixed in. Jain Irrigation uses the biochar on its own farms and supplies it to local farmers. The company says the deal is not a related-party transaction and has filed it under SEBI disclosure rules.
