Jain Irrigation commissions world scale biochar reactor in Maharashtra for carbon removal and soil health

Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd has commissioned a 20,000 tonne per year biochar facility in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, one of the largest single-unit biochar reactors globally. The plant processes over 50 tonnes of agricultural and fruit residue daily using pyrolysis to create a stable carbon material that stores carbon for centuries. The biochar is verified for carbon credits by Puro.earth and aims to reduce stubble burning while improving soil structure and water retention. The project creates a farm to soil circular economy where crop residues become a soil amendment, cutting reliance on synthetic fertilisers and opening new income for farmers. Jain Irrigation plans to use its distribution network reaching over 10 million farmers across 120 countries to scale deployment. Further reactors are under development to expand processing capacity and support national climate goals.
