J&K plans carbon credit framework to monetize green assets and fund climate resilience
brighterkashmir.comJammu and Kashmir is reviewing a carbon credit framework to turn its ecological assets into revenue. The proposal, presented by CITaG and the Finance Department, covers carbon markets, green cess, and a dedicated Green Fund. Officials are targeting agriculture, hydropower, and forestry as priority sectors, with pilots planned in Srinagar and Jammu municipal corporations. A proposed revenue split would give 35% of net carbon proceeds to primary growers or community owners, 30% to the J&K Green Fund, 15% to farmer producer organizations, and 10% each to district climate projects and sector accounts. The plan also includes a green tourism contribution and a 180-day roadmap. Officials cite earnings by BMC, Gujarat, and Himachal Pradesh as examples of what's possible.
