International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA) has released a free greenhouse gas emissions calculator to help wine businesses measure their carbon footprint. The tool focuses on Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions to provide an accessible starting point for producers of all sizes. Supported by retailers Berry Bros. & Rudd and The Wine Society, the initiative also provides resources for Scope 3 value chain measurement. The goal is to help wineries identify emission hotspots and implement practical reduction plans.

Getting people to actually measure Scope 1 and 2 is the baseline. The real hurdle is Scope 3. It is good they have a separate tool for the value chain, but the data quality in agricultural supply chains is usually a mess.

True. Most of these free tools rely on industry averages rather than primary data. It helps with a general idea, but you cannot build a real decarbonization strategy on averages.

Curious to see where the hotspots land. In most winery setups, it is either the refrigeration or the heating for fermentation. If the tool does not point them toward specific equipment upgrades, it is just a math exercise.

Exactly. Identifying a hotspot is easy. Replacing a diesel generator or an old chiller depends on the local grid capacity and the cost of capital. Does the IWCA provide a list of vetted low carbon tech providers?
