International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA) has released a free greenhouse gas emissions calculator to help wine businesses measure their carbon footprint. Partnering with retailers Berry Bros. & Rudd and The Wine Society, the initiative aims to lower the barrier for wineries to begin tracking Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. The tool allows producers to identify emission hotspots and develop reduction plans. IWCA also provides additional resources for Scope 3 value chain measurement, enabling businesses to scale their carbon accounting efforts at their own pace.

Getting Scope 1 and 2 sorted is a start, but the real battle in wine is Scope 3. Glass, transport, and fertilizer usually dwarf the direct emissions. Glad they are offering a path to move toward value chain accounting without making it too daunting for small producers.

Curious about the hotspots they find. For many of these facilities, it comes down to old refrigeration units and inefficient heating. If the calculator points to the problem, the next step is finding the capital for the actual equipment upgrades.

Exactly. Measurement is just data. The real hurdle is the cost of electrification and whether the local grid can even handle a switch to industrial heat pumps in rural vineyard areas.
