An Italian appeals court is set to rule on the country's first climate lawsuit against the state. The case, launched in 2021 by environmental group A Sud and more than 200 other groups and individuals, argues that Italy has failed to meet Paris Agreement goals and is violating fundamental rights. The original demand was a 92% cut in emissions by 2030 compared with 1990 levels. A lower court in 2024 ruled that civil courts do not have jurisdiction over government climate decisions, a position the claimants are now challenging. They point to a 2024 European Court of Human Rights ruling in a Swiss case that linked climate protection to human rights, and have submitted fresh evidence on heat-related deaths, desertification, and flood risks. A ruling for the claimants could force Italy to strengthen its climate policies and set a precedent for similar cases across Europe.
