Isometric and Marsh have launched an insurance framework for reforestation carbon projects. Developers certified by Isometric can now use approved insurance policies to replace part of the buffer pool contributions they would normally set aside to cover potential reversals such as wildfires or disease. Five insurers are approved so far: Artio, CarbonPool, CFC, Kita, and Oka. The point is to free up revenue in the early years of a project, when financing and operating costs are highest. Buffer pools still exist, but insurance takes on part of that risk. Isometric is also looking at whether the same approach can be applied to other carbon removal pathways. The practical question is whether premiums cost less than the credits developers would otherwise hold back, and whether claims pay out cleanly when a reversal actually happens.
