Isometric and Marsh launch carbon reversal insurance for certified reforestation projects
carbonherald.comIsometric, a carbon removal registry, has launched an insurance framework that lets certified reforestation projects cover part of their carbon reversal risk with approved insurance policies instead of buffer pool contributions. The framework was developed with broker Marsh and is meant to free up more credits for sale while keeping safeguards for buyers. Artio, CarbonPool, CFC, Kita, and Oka are the first approved providers. Under the old model, developers had to reserve a share of issued certificates in a buffer pool to protect against reversals such as wildfires or disease. With insurance, they can reduce those reserves and sell more credits early, improving project finances. Isometric says the approach does not weaken the guarantee that each retired certificate represents one tonne of CO2 removed. Isometric is also looking at extending the insurance approach to other carbon removal pathways. For reforestation developers, the immediate question is how insurers price wildfire and disease risk, and how quickly claims pay out after a reversal event. The registry has not published the detailed eligibility requirements yet.
