Aindrias Moynihan, chair of the Oireachtas agriculture committee, says Ireland has not yet seen the biggest pressure on fertiliser costs. Speaking at the National Ploughing Championships, he pointed to CBAM, the EU carbon border tax, which started in January and raises the cost of imported carbon-intensive goods like fertiliser. He noted that many buyers stocked up ahead of the levy, which may have softened early price increases. Moynihan also highlighted the ongoing Middle East conflict as a key driver of fuel and fertiliser costs. He called for maximum support in the upcoming budget to help farmers manage these pressures. The committee plans to prioritise farming viability while also handling new legislation on animal welfare and deforestation.
