Ireland is overhauling its residential Building Energy Rating (BER) system to align with the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. The updated scale simplifies ratings from A to G and introduces a new A0 category specifically for zero-emission homes that do not rely on fossil fuels. New certificates will provide more detailed data on greenhouse gas emissions and renewable energy use. While existing certificates remain valid for ten years, the new system aims to push higher efficiency standards for new builds starting in 2030.
