Ireland to boost timber use in construction with seven recommendations for low-carbon homes

Ireland's government will review seven recommendations from the Timber in Construction Steering Group to increase the use of Irish-grown timber in buildings. The report, released in June 2026, covers regulation, procurement, and innovation, with specific departmental leads and timelines. Ireland's forest cover is 11.6% of land area, and roundwood supply is expected to rise from 5 million to 7.8 million cubic meters by 2035. The recommendations aim to make Irish-grown timber the primary material for new homes by 2050, using modern construction methods and longer-life timber products to lower carbon emissions. Over 3 billion euros have been invested in forest resources since the 1980s, with 1.3 billion euros committed for 2023-2027. The government will now decide on adoption of these measures.
