Activ8 Solar Energies has started building a 6MW rooftop solar array on Mannok's manufacturing facilities in Co. Cavan. The project covers 3.88 hectares of rooftop and will use around 10,000 solar panels. It is expected to avoid 792 tonnes of carbon emissions each year and supply a significant portion of Mannok's electricity demand. The installation is funded through a Power Purchase Agreement with SSE Airtricity, meaning Mannok does not pay upfront capital costs. Instead, it buys the electricity generated at a reduced rate. This structure is part of a larger 200 million euro funded solar initiative from Activ8 and SSE Airtricity. The project shows how industrial manufacturers can use onsite renewables without large initial investment.

792 tonnes a year is modest for a manufacturer. But the PPA structure is the real story. If more industrial sites can get funded solar without capex, that changes the math for a lot of facilities.

6MW on 3.88 hectares is about 1.5 MW per hectare. That is reasonable for rooftop. I would like to know the interconnection timeline and if there is any curtailment risk on that part of the Irish grid.

The PPA structure is key here. SSE Airtricity funds it, Mannok buys the power at a reduced rate. That removes the upfront cost barrier. If more Irish industrial sites can access similar funded PPAs, you could see a lot more rooftop solar without waiting for grant schemes.

Worth noting that 792 tonnes is a small fraction of a cement and plastics manufacturer's total emissions. But every bit helps. The PPA model is the real innovation here. If it works for Mannok, other factories might follow.
