The Irish Department of Climate, Energy and Environment has written off over 700,000 carbon credits. These credits, originally bought to meet Kyoto Protocol emissions targets, became worthless after European Union framework restrictions limited the types of credits member states could apply. This move effectively renders the state's carbon fund dormant.
