Iran Proposes BRICS Standards for Carbon Reduction and Green Economy at Bengaluru Meeting

Iran's Vice President Farzaneh Ansari put forward three proposals at the BRICS Heads of National Standards Bodies meeting in Bengaluru. The initiatives focus on creating common standards for artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, carbon emission reduction and green economy reporting, and mutual recognition of trade certificates among member states. The carbon and green economy proposal aims to align sustainability reporting across BRICS nations, which could affect how carbon markets and emission reductions are measured in major developing economies. The trade harmonization piece would let inspection certificates from one member be accepted by others, potentially lowering barriers for green goods and services. These proposals are still under review for inclusion in a broader BRICS Memorandum of Understanding on standardization. If adopted, they could create a framework for cross-border carbon accounting and green certification among countries that represent a large share of global emissions.
