Iran proposes BRICS standards for carbon reduction and green economy at Bengaluru meeting

Iran's Vice President Farzaneh Ansari put forward three initiatives at the BRICS Heads of National Standards Bodies Meeting in Bengaluru. The proposals cover standardisation in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, carbon emission reduction and green economy reporting, and mutual recognition of trade certificates. The initiatives aim to create common technical standards across BRICS member states. The carbon and green economy proposal focuses on harmonising how member countries measure and report emissions reductions and sustainability metrics. If adopted, this could create a framework for cross-border carbon accounting within the bloc. The meeting is reviewing a draft Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in standardisation. Iran's push for standardised carbon reporting fits into broader trends of developing common climate metrics for trade blocs. The outcome depends on whether BRICS members agree on specific methodologies and enforcement mechanisms. The proposals are under consideration for inclusion in the final MoU.
