But I'd like to see the recycled content broken down by material and how much of it is mass vs functional substitution. Not all recycled metals cut carbon equally.

From a buildings angle, the lesson is that embodied carbon matters more than operating energy when the product is already efficient. For phones it's the reverse of buildings, where operating energy dominates. That 13% customer use share shows Apple can't cut much more on efficiency. The remaining levers are materials and supplier energy, and both have long payback curves.

What I find harder to verify is the 43 Mt avoided claim. That number is bigger than Apple's gross emissions, so the methodology must be doing heavy lifting. Would be useful to see the counterfactual.

Half of manufacturing electricity from renewables sounds neat, but I want to know the instrument behind it. Is that bundled RECs, virtual PPAs, or physically delivered renewable electrons to supplier plants? Also, does that 50% include chip fabs and battery plants or just final assembly? The supply chain is where the real carbon is.

The bigger test is whether supplier clean energy and recycled materials keep scaling beyond the iPhone line, because product manufacturing plus use is 80% of the footprint.
