Iowa Utilities Commission removes North and South Dakota terms from Summit carbon pipeline order

The Iowa Utilities Commission issued two new orders related to Summit Carbon Solutions' proposed carbon pipeline. One order requires Summit to submit a new plan following the rules. The other order removes language about the North and South Dakota portions of the pipeline but still prohibits construction in Iowa until the IUC approves a new route and the carbon storage site meets regulatory requirements. Summit Carbon Solutions originally proposed the nearly 700-mile pipeline in 2021 to transport captured carbon dioxide from ethanol plants to an underground storage site. The IUC approved the plan in 2024, sparking legal battles. These latest orders clarify that Summit must follow proper procedures and cannot start building in Iowa until it secures approval for a revised route and the storage site is certified. Summit declined to comment on the orders.
