Inverclyde has been named one of Scotland's top five council areas for recycling, with SEPA data showing 53.1% of municipal waste, over 14,000 tonnes, is reused or repurposed. The area also records the lowest household waste per person and the lowest household carbon impact in Scotland, at 0.71 tonnes of CO2 per person compared to the national average of 0.96 tonnes. The council credits recent service improvements, including adding around 4,000 tenement properties to kerbside recycling through a Zero Waste Scotland partnership. A long-term contract with Viridor now ensures biodegradable waste is diverted from landfill and converted into energy for homes. These steps align with Inverclyde's net zero strategy and have helped cut landfill reliance while lowering emissions.
