INEOS Starts EU's First Full-Scale Offshore CO2 Storage at Greensand Facility in Denmark
worldoil.comINEOS Energy has launched commercial operations at the Greensand CO2 storage facility offshore Denmark, marking the European Union's first full-scale site for permanent offshore carbon storage. The project, a partnership with Harbour Energy and the Danish North Sea Fund, initially stores up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, with plans to expand to 4-8 million tonnes annually. CO2 is captured from Danish biomethane plants, liquefied, trucked to the Port of Esbjerg, then shipped on a purpose-built carrier for injection into the depleted Nini West oil field about 250 km offshore and 1,800 meters beneath the seabed. The project uses biogenic CO2 at first to prove the full value chain while larger industrial capture projects develop. INEOS says the site could later accept emissions from industries across Europe. King Frederik X of Denmark officially opened the facility on September 18, 2026. Greensand is a key step for CCS in Europe, moving from plans to operational storage.
